Cessation of Tobacco : My Story May Help

My brother and some friends of mine insisted me to write a blog about how one can get rid of tobacco addiction i.e. smoking & smokeless, as earlier I used to devour tobacco in its almost every forms i.e. smoking, chewing Gutka and khaini etc. In addition to that there was a sense of social responsibility to share these experiences for welfare of humanity as every year more than 1 million deaths occur due to tobacco related diseases in India only.
4 year back when I visited AIMS Delhi to meet one my friend who was getting treated there, I came across some cancer patients. Some of them were suffering from mouth cancer and throat cancer. It was really that much horrific that I am unable to explain. Later one AIMS staff nurse told me that maximum of them having the diseases due to tobacco abuse. That day I realized that tobacco not only fatal but can makes one’s life a hell and that very day I decided to quit tobacco.
Now it’s almost 4 years since I took a last intake of tobacco in the form of a cigarette, I also want to share another fact that I had been taking tobacco for approximately 10 years. Therefore today I would like to share my experience in below generalize points:
1. In order to get rid of tobacco first you have to make a plan with a timeline keeping below points in mind :
a. 1 day to 1 week: It’s a worst time for an addicted person as in this span of time, as nicotine level decreases a wide range of withdrawal symptoms appear. These are depressed mood, anxiety, headache, Nausea, Fatigue, drowsiness, and insomnia, Difficulty concentrating etc.
Therefore make a note that to start cessation choose the time when you have at least 2-3 days holiday or you are free from you work because it is difficult to concentrate on anything during this span of time.
b. 1 week to 1 month: This is the time when above symptoms can be persist; however severity of these symptoms decreases. Now you can go to your work ,you should keep one thing in mind though that this is the duration when you are prone to get the addiction again. You can feel a great craving of tobacco so avoid the situation which can trigger it again.
c. 1 month to 6 months: Be persistent, now this is the time to make your mind strong enough to be persistent in your decision. Sometime you feel a bit craving of nicotine but you have to make yourself understand that it’s not a permanent situation, some more days and you would be okay.
d. After 6 months: Now you would feel a lot of energy and you can savor the life. Now you can enjoy your meal with good taste. However avoid to reunion with tobacco user fraternity.
And as I did enjoy every above step you also can and celebrate these milestones.
2. In order to be persistent and to get positive energy to tackle with withdrawal symptom, you should start exercise; it can be a yoga session, a morning walk, a gym exercise anything. So make sure to be indulging in any of above exercise.
3. A piece of ginger, a flower bud of clove or even a green pepper can be chewed when you think that there is a great craving.
4. Make sure to have balance diet including green vegetables, seasonal fruits and lot of water. Water is very important for detoxification.
5. Keep yourself busy with your favorite work. It can be reading good literature, gardening, photography, writing, playing, anything which can make you engrossed.
Most of the cases there is no medication required, however it is suggested to start cessation firstly consult with your doctor.
